“The Witch of Konotop” in Geneva!
On January 13, 2025, the Ukrainian play “The Witch of Konotop” directed by Ivan Uryvsky and based on the novel by Hryhoriy Kvitka-Osnovyanenko, will be performed in Geneva. The play was first presented in the spring of 2023, and since then it has impressed and fascinated many viewers, not only with the story itself, but also with the approach to its presentation.
There are minimal sets on stage, the emphasis is on acting, and an important aspect of the play is its visual and audio components: music and sounds create a mystical effect, and light projections and shadows enhance the atmosphere of mystery.
Ukrainian theater performance at Bâtiment des Forces Motrices!
The story that will unfold before your eyes combines a lot of acute social and political issues, mysticism, and Ukrainian folklore. The play questions traditional stereotypes about witches, emphasizing the themes of female power and independence. It also addresses fears and prejudices, the historical persecution and oppression of women, particularly in the context of public and social norms.
